Our new paper, out in GEOLOGY, discusses the first in situ subglacial lake sediment record! We combine geophysical observations of the subglacial environment, image analysis of the sediment core, and quantitative stratigraphy techniques to determine a sedimentation rate in the lake. With this, we determined that Mercer Subglacial Lake was born ~180 years ago, coincident with the stagnation of a nearby ice stream (Kamb Ice Stream). The timing of Mercer Subglacial Lakes’ initiation revealed that subglacial lakes in Antarctica are intricately linked to the dynamics of the overlying ice sheet and that sediments at the base of these lakes contain powerful century-scale records of ice history. #nsfgov #antarctica
